Review: Snus Hill Winery

Thanks to Groupon, some friends and I snagged a HALF OFF ticket to Snus Hill Winery's wine tasting class and tour and we attended this last Saturday afternoon.

The tasting started out with some history of the winery (Snus is their cat's name) and most of the discussion moved into the Smell pillar of the the four S's of wine (See, Swirl, Smell and Sip).  The owners, who were conducting the "class" themselves, let us taste 4-5 wines and then they set up a little "smell" test with glasses of wine we were to smell and guess the predominant ingredient.

I personally got 6 out of 10 which isn't too bad but I'm definitely not a person who can smell wine easily and determine its hint of oak.  I guess I need to see, smell, swirl and sip more! :)
Check out this Wine Aroma Wheel of smells possibilities!

Next we got to head down to the wine cellar which was definitely neat.

We were able to taste test a couple of wines that weren't quite finished processing yet and get a feel for the pre-finished product.

*Note the "dumping trough" for those who couldn't handle the not finished wine yet.  Nobody in my group dared resist a free glass of wine - done fermenting or not!

Next we were allowed to head up to the purchasing counter to sample any other of their wines that we saw fit - ANY OF THEM!  I ended up with two bottles of wine to take home, one for him and one for her.

Overall it was a great experience and nice to have it half off!
Not to mention with some great ladies!

If you are looking to see a winery in action I would recommend Snus and check out their events calendar.  Nice weather in Iowa brings family friendly gatherings with live bands, food, and wine all on a Friday night!
