I read this book recently because - everyone's doing it. :)
I mean, my sister read it so it must be good. She hasn't read a book since it was assigned to her by a teacher and even then I'm almost positive she just googled it.
So The Hunger Games sucked me in from the beginning. I don't normally like sci-fi type movies or books or things that aren't really of this world but I can totally see something like this happening in the future as more and more government policies and practices come closer to socialism and over controlling these days (okay not political rants coming I promise).
The gist of the story is that there are two kids chosen from each of twelve districts to fight to the death in order to remind the entire country of such wars and to remind people to obey "The Capitol." The main characters comes from the poorest district in the country and its a great story about their battle to attempt to win these games meanwhile getting closer and closer and knowing that they may end up having to fight each other to the death. The book ends with a good enough cliffhanger that I immediately wanted to start book two but of course didn't have it on hand. I don't want to say too much because the element of surprise is great in the book.
The movie just came out but I will wait until reading all three before I see the movie. Just in case it has spoilers for the next books.
This is a three book series and I will be reading it within the month most likely.
